This was my second Candace Bushnell novel my first being Lipstick Jungle. I choose not to read Sex and the City first because it just seems like I would be set up for disopointment if the book was to different from the show. I am someone who ussually ends up always thinking the book is better but I have read certain things about Sex and the City the book that make me scared to read it and have to accept that is how the characters I have grown to love are not who I expected them to be like. So after reading Lipstick Jungle I was in love with her writing style and the story. It was obviously set up to play out as if it could be a tv show (which it did become) but I found it interesting and something I could read for a long period of time. I bought Lipstick Jungle with One Fifth and well I read the opening and found it confusing so tried to ignore the book for a few months until I needed a long book to read for an assignment so I got it off a shelf and got into it and well....The book is not as bad as some people on here comment it to be but... it has TO MANY CHARACTERS I have never read a book where their are this many characters. I am not sure what the point of the amount of characters was and she did not give them an equal amount of time the character of Billy who opens up the book disapears till almost half way through the first act of the book another character who shows up around the same time Billy reapears named Lola is annoying she comes into the story as a "Socailite" wannabe from the south who dreams of being in the world of Carrie Bradshaw (this actually is in the book so she does not write in the same universe from book to book yet most of her books if not all are all set in New York City)several characters I started out liking but by the end of the book I felt nothing for them.
One Character in particular who you are introduced to hate Mindy Gooche who is said to be a characterised as a middle aged woman who is unable to have sex due to a pane she feels from penitration. Mindy has a husband named James who is a writer who has written one or two good books and struck it big with his latest book making him think he can get Lola to fall for him which she does. Mindy also has a son Sam who is 13 and feels he needs to be nice to everyone in the building because of his mothers behaivor. Mindy is not rich like the others in the building she lives in an apartment that used to be a maids residents when it was a hotel. Mindy wants to be rich but will never be. By the end of the book you actually do feel something for Mindy she is no better in personality but by the end the people who you are supposed to like all become less sympothetic and Mindy becomes the character to love.
I did not hate the book I did not love it though I would recomend reading it you have to read it till the end and read it for what it is. I thought it was funny and well written but is flawed. I suggest reading Lipstick Jungle either before or after this one because Candace Bushnell can write and Lipstick Jungle is a good book just like this one but focuses on less characters.

Overall I can honestly say I wasn't disappointed. Bushnell captivated me in with interesting characters each completely different. We are immediately introduced to Billy Litchfield, a fabulous gay man in his 40s living it up in Manhattan. Billy's illustrious lifestyle is thanks to his wealthy friends and not from his own financial success. Mrs. Louise Houghton, an extremely wealthy socialite, dies at the beginning leaving her $20 million rare and exquisite One Fifth Avenue penthouse apartment up for grabs. With Billy's help new money and new to NYC couple Paul and Annalisa Rice are able to obtain it. The Rice's financial success strives from Paul, a mathematical genius who left Washington for the opportunity for work for successful hedge-funder Sandy Brewer. Sandy's wife Connie befriends Annalisa and with the help of her and Billy the transformation of Annalisa from ex-Washington attorney to NYC socialite housewife occurs instantly. But Annalisa never loses her Washington attorney analytical skills and witty personality.
Moving on to actual residents of One Fifth are James and Mindy Gooch. Mindy is a bitchy exec always thinking the world isn't fair and she should have Mrs. Houghton's apartment. The kicker is that she is head of the building board. Nevertheless Annalisa charms Mindy and not wanting the apartment to sit Mindy agrees to let the new money couple buy the apartment. After the purchase Paul Rice transforms to loving mathematician husband to money hungry crazy man. By the end of the book I was hating him! Mindy starts a blog that gains her success while her husband James finally writes a successful novel worthy of the number 1 spot on the NY Times best seller list. Before his success Mindy was the family breadwinner. Without giving away too much at the beginning of the book I was hating Mindy but really liking her by the end.
James uses his new fame status to land an affair with 22 year old gold digging Lola Fabrikant. Lola moves to NY from Atlanta and lives a non-typical 22 year old NYC lifestyle thanks to her seemingly well off parents. Before James, Lola was working for, then sleeping with, then living with Phillip Oakland a Hollywood screenplay writer living in One Fifth. Phillip had an on and off lifelong love affair with Schiffer Diamond a Hollywood actress who has returned to NY and One Fifth to star in a cable sitcom about an ex-nun turned magazine exec. Schiffer and her show become a huge success while Phillip is stuck in a horrible situation with the vindictive Lola and feels like he's never really grown up. Eventually Schiffer and Phillip reconnect while Lola's parents go bankrupt, hence the need for Lola to sleep with James. To make Lola's life more complicated Enid Merle, Phillip's aunt lives in One Fifth and stays a constant pill in Lola's side. Eventually Lola gets together with someone just as vindictive and closer to her age. Other characters like Flossie Davis thicken the plot line and narrow the degrees of separation.
All in all Bushnell kept me entertained and fascinated so that I didn't want to put the book down. This might be my favorite book by her and I highly recommend it!
