THE THIRD CIRCLE is the fourth book in the Arcane Society series. It is the story of Thaddeus Ware, who is a hypnotic talent and Leona Hewitt, who is a crystal worker. Both of them end up being somewhat on the fringes because neither talent is well respected amongst the Arcane. The two end up working together to solve a serial killer mystery and also the story of the series of a cabal intending to enhance talents for criminal purposes continues to be a threat to the Arcane Society. While readers of the series will be pleased with the progress of the ongoing story, new readers can pick up this book without missing much. The Arcane books are written as historicals (Amanda Quick), contemporaries (Jayne Ann Krentz) and futuristic (Jayne Castle). While this book is the fourth in the series, the only historical proceeding it is SECOND SIGHT. Each time period can be read separately but the history is continued throughout the series.
This book has one of my favorite couples. Thaddeus and Leona are two people who have been isolated from people because of their talents. Leona is acting as a crystal worker helping people deal with bad dreams. Thaddeus is using his talent to help solve crimes with Scotland Yard. The two meet over a dead body both thinking that the other may be a murderer. The two end up having a deep connection that is both emotional and psychic.
The interweaving of the killer and cabal mystery keeps a reader on edge trying to figure out where the various pieces of the puzzle go. I really like how the various levels of story are interweaved in this book and through the series.

What a rip roaring read. Never a dull moment.
There is so much going on you sometimes don’t care if it seems you’ll be sidetracked along the way. Then, the next thing you know, all is back on track and hurtling to its conclusion.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Bad guys, yes, but all with a touch of whimsy.
The book arrived in good shape and on time. I'm a fan of Jayne Ann Krentz, who writes as Amanda Quick for her historical novels. The Arcane Society is an association of people who are para-normally gifted, banded together to protect and study their gifts. Our hero is one of them. He's on the search for a powerful crystal, stolen long ago and said to be currently hidden in a private museum. Our heroine is also after the crystal, which she believes belongs to her, descending through her family. They meet in the museum the night of a ball, over the body of a murdered girl. They find the stone but he's drugged with a nightmare gas and she has to rescue him, using her psychic ability and aided by the powerful crystal. They band together to try to thwart a mad scientist and secret group within the Arcane Society, who are after enhanced power and control. Of course they acknowledge their feeling for each other as well. The plot is exciting, description vivid, characters believable, and English grammar good.
Leona Hewitt's power is crystal working. Crystal workers are held in a very low opinion in the Arcane Society due to the legend of Sybil, the rival of the Arcane Society's founder, Sylvester. In her time, Sybil used the green Aurora Stone often. The crystal is useless unless it is activated by someone with the very rare talent. The Aurora Stone was stolen from Leona's mother eleven years ago. So when Leona received word that Lord Delbridge currently had possession of the stone, she crashed his party to retrieve it. The last thing Leona expected was to meet Thaddeus Ware, especially while he was standing over the body of a streetwalker with her throat slashed.
The papers call the serial killer the Midnight Monster. Gabriel Jones, the new Master of the Arcane Society, has given Thaddeus the job of finding out the name of the killer and stopping him. The killer is not only an intelligent madman, but is also a Hunter. Using a Hunter's psychical abilities means that the normal police would never capture him. When Leona crashes into Thaddeus, he immediately sets out to get her to safety. However, it turns out that the lady is after the same artifact he is. Circumstances soon compel the two to join forces. For Leona's protection, she and her extraordinary dog, Fog, move into a townhouse with Thaddeus and his formidable great-aunt.
Another secret society, The Third Circle of the Order of the Emerald Tablet, has been promised the Aurora Stone as a gift from Lord Delbridge and they are en route to pick it up. The Third Circle will also need someone able to work the crystal. It just so happens that Lord Delbridge knows about Leona's crystal talents.
**** Let me say first off that you should NOT read the first four books of this series in order of release. Instead, read them in the order events happened. Read in the following order
SECOND SIGHT, Book One
THE THIRD CIRCLE, Book Four
WHITE LIES, Book two
SIZZLE & BURN, Book Three
In this story readers will see the J&J agency's birth. After this book, the story jumps to the modern day with the title, WHITE LIES (book two). Readers get the last of the solid foundation needed to set up the rest of this series. Krentz made sure to keep all of the era's rules of etiquettes in mind as the situation evolved around the story's characters. I found that the secondary characters are almost as interesting as the main. The great-aunt is included in a sub-plot, which makes the entire story even more entertaining. Highly recommended! ****

I haven't really liked any of the paranormal mystery/romances that Quick has been writing. I have a number of her earlier works - Mystique, Mischief, Deception, etc. - but although I've read most of her more recent paranormals, none of them interested me enough to be worth keeping.
This one....just maybe, might be the first. I'm at least considering it, which is a big change. Although formulaic, the characters are more interesting and vivid. Even so, it doesn't compare with the quality of her older books.
This story is dark, disturbing, and repetitive. Make sure you can handle it. Scenes include poison, hallucination of aggression towards the heroine, and repetitive discussion of demons. The characters just exist - they are not developed or endearing like many of her other characters. I really enjoy her work. But this one is not a relaxing read!
