I have enjoyed many stories that include Native American characters; consequently, I have been a little disappointed at how those characters are often presented stereotypically as the noble savage or demonic savage. This work was penned by a student of the cultures who writes with honesty but with a story spinners art. There are enough twists and turns to keep the reader wondering, but there are some predictable moves also and many flaws for my taste.

The author establishes a family with which the reader will sympathize through the multiracial marriage of a French Canadian and an Indian girl, an adoption, a father who loves his adopted son as much as his biological son, and young men who seek glory and honor for themselves and the family.

All of the ingredients could have been a much better story, but a large percentage of these many pages are spent in sexual lust that doesn't seem to serve any definite purpose other than possibly trying to show the native characters as very human, as though being human requires lots of sex and providing details will make it more believable. The inner workings of the tribes feel natural, and inclusion of the liars and cheats, the political maneuvering, and the battle of the sexes make this a good effort to show the characters as complex and diverse.

It is difficult to tell if the writer wants the reader to really admire the father in this book or see him as a blind man with no will to stand for what is right in the face of what he wants. This Canadian of French descent adopts the son of a dead white friend, then hides from the white world that the boy is white for fear they will cause problems for the family, then when his biological son through his Indian wife truly loves a white girl and sires twin boys on her, the loving father has her killed, hides his actions from his family, keeps the babies, and dies with the dead girl on his mind and lips in sorrow because he had to eliminate her to keep the family from being torn apart. Ironically, the only child he had left was the white boy he adopted. Interesting.

Through the remarkable DeGeer family, this extraordinary novel introduces us to an almost forgotten people wrested from their tribal ways and forced into a new life on a rapidly changing frontier. The intricacies of Crow Indian culture are as fascinating as the harrowing scenes of warfare and tragedy that befall this collection of memorable characters. Flowing with Indian culture, in particular Crow, Medawar weaves a beautiful story of life in the 1800s in a mixed Indian family. Her characters are very well developed, and become quite real, as opposed to what one of the publishers' reviews said. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, and look forward to finding more. The story is really alive, and she has a wonderful way with words...even including some humor. If you can find it, read it.
"People of the Whistling Waters" by Mardi Oakley Medawar captured my attention from the very first page. Her characters come to life with her talented dialogue and authentic action. Medawar's depiction of the Crow Nation is insightful. Medawar snared my interest and held it to the very last page. I am eager to read more from this great author. ...
I really enjoyed this book! I have read over a dozen Historical Fiction North American Indian books and none had introduced me to the Crow Nation. Most HF books center on other tribes and only speak of the Crow as war crazed animals.
I found The Crow to be a lovely people who loved and lived with extreme passion. ALthough the father figure is a Frenchman who lived with the Lakota and then became Crow to marry Willow (Crow Indians were thought to be the most attractive tribe)
I am sorry to say that I was about ready to stop reading this after the first chapter. I found the dialect of Renee to be more of an odd mix of Jamaican! It was difficult to even read his dialog. I love to read scottish dialog, but his french, crow english was painfull to read. I am glad that I looked past that and continued on as after the first chapter the story really took off. Sometimes a slow start is not the way the whole book will play out.
I cried and I laughed and I fell in love with this family and the Crow tribe. They are not war crazed animals, and it is s shame there are not more books about them, especially considering the Crow had the most handsome faces and figures.
This is a marvelous, thoroughly entertaining and very interesting book. The characters, beginning with Renee and Willow DeGeer and their family, are complex and intriguing. The story focuses on the period between the 1830's, when white settlers began moving onto Crow land, and the 1880's, after the Crow have moved to the reservation, moved into houses and begun taking "real" jobs. The story begins with Nicholas, the adopted son, and follows him as he is assmilated into the Whistling Waters Clan. The relationship between the DeGeer parents and their children is warm, loving and humorous. The book is full of historical and cultural details and, as is usual with Medawar's books, all the women are small and feisty while all the men are tall and handsome. This book won the Western Writers of America award for best first novel in 1994.
