I grew up in Scotland, so the title had a certain irresistible appeal(!), but this book provided context that was missing entirely in my history classes in school. It's certainly no puff-piece for Scotland, because the author minces no words describing the darker side of 17th and 18th Century Scottish culture, but it is a scholarly and well-rounded view of the birthplace of the Enlightenment and its profound effect on Western thought, politics and education. The USA is my adopted country, as it has been for so many Scots, and although I knew much of the Scottish influence on the founding of this country, I had no idea it ran so deep or wide.

I wouldn't dream of spoiling the surprises for anyone who has not read this yet, other than to say that no-one who is a student of American history can afford not to read this book. The depth of research and the unvarnished, warts-and-all approach Mr. Herman takes to his subject matter make it a must read.

I found the description of this book so intriguing that I actually paid real money for the ebook, and I got more than my money's worth! The author clearly did his research, and the result was a very long but fascinating history of Scotland's contributions to modern day philosophy, ethics, politics, medicine, science, and society. As both my husband and I have Scots blood, I was really interested to learn of the true back story of Scotland and the disbursement of Scots across the world, as well as their effect on government, technological advances, and belief systems. It did take me several goes to get through the book, but I'm glad that I did. There were a few typos, but it's not surprising given the length of the book. I will have to follow this author to see what else I can learn!
What a great book! I really enjoyed it. Way better than I expected. Not light reading, but very interesting to read about some of the great thinkers from Scotland and the people they influenced throughout history. Very thoughtful and well written. But you do have to pay attention; there is a lot of name dropping.
I enjoyed this book mostly for the first part where he deals with the strife and turmoil of the late 17th and early 18th centuries and the people who fought for and eventually lost independence. He gives good reviews of the people involved and how Scotland after joining England became for a short while the leading intellectual center in Great Britain. Having lived for a year in Scotland in the early 1960s I was aware of some of the history and the divide between the Highlands and Lowlands. The second part of the book lists the Scots who migrated to multiple countries and were key figures in those countries history. While they did play an important role, I found this part less interesting than the first. If you are a Scottish history buff this is a good book but won't be of much interest to the general public
"How the Scots Invented the Modern World" ranks as one of the best books that I have read in the past several years. It is simply amazing how much information that author Arthur Herman was able to cover in just over 400 pages, yet he does so with great ease. This is a **must read** for anyone interested in Scotland, the Scottish people, and/or the development of the modern world.
Although many parts of this book were interesting I found that it was a little hard to follow because the history was not arranged in chronological order. The time periods shifted back & forth too much for me to keep track of. I ended up not finishing the book because it was too irritating to read.
This was a great book to prepare me for my first visit to Scotland and to appreciate the many contributions -- mostly good, but some not so -- that Scots have sown in the rest of the world. It reminded me that Scotland is a lot more than its marshal tradition and petty feuds between clans and wars over royal succession. Unfortunately when you visit Scotland it is easy to overlook the contributions of the Scottish Enlightenment among all the castles, natural scenic beauty, and single malt whiskey that are easier to promote for tourism. This books alerted me to some things to watch for.
This is a very interesting book. It is well written, and presented me with facts and some historical figures of whom I had not previously been aware (and I have usually considered myself fairly well-educated!). Many of us in this country--including myself, have Scots or Scots-Irish ancestry, so it was quite fun to read that practically every great idea or invention in Western history from, say, 1600 is due to SCOTS!!!
Entertaining idea aside, I'm afraid that this book falls into what I call the "Every Great Man..." category. I'm sure you know what I mean! We have all come across books whose authors "identify" with a certain group, and who put forth the theory that unbeknownst to the rest of us, "Every Great Man" in history belongs to that group, or was, at least, put on the road to greatness through mentors from that group!
Despite this rather narrow focus, though, the book presents an interesting viewpoint and helps make fairly "dry" areas of history more colorful and accessible!
