My Way to You Brothers in Law Lyndell Williams Books

When I read the summary of this book before deciding to buy it, I had questions. Now that it's done? I have even more.

For starters, the writer has what I call a "wordy" writing style. That means 1) Every little detail is described--details that don't contribute overall to the story. If you have good character development then you don't need to feed information to readers constantly. Your work will do it. 2) Unusual use of SAT-style words. In some works it's warranted, but in this one it wasn't. It didn't match switching up between slang and words that belong in a Harlequin novel. 3) Adding in plot points that die. What happened to them getting evicted? All that talk of the wedding but no actual chapter ON the wedding? We just jump into calling her his wife??? What was the actual outcome of the trial? We knew the plea option, but it wasn't confirmed.

The character development was also "off". Simon was okay (and very well written), but Marcus came off unstable--and Regina came off nuts. She was hot and cold, making big deals out of small things and small deals our of big issues. Honestly she acted like a bipolar ditz most of the time, so she was hard to take seriously. I found myself rooting for Simon: to leave her.

That's where the character development comes in. Readers should not hate your heroine. They should also recognize her as a heroine, not a hindrance.

There were also more than a fair share of grammatical and spelling errors. Sigh... I'm always disappointed to see that.

I finished this novel only because I paid for it. The sample was written well--but it didn't match the rest. Really felt kind of cheated by ther high star rating and reviews.

Honestly felt like this was a short story extended to a novel with extras thrown in to make it full length. IMHO, this should be a $0.99 book. Feel kind of cheated.

My Way to You Brothers in Law Lyndell Williams Books Reviews

I can't believe this book has so few reviews. This is bomb.com 💣
It's so rare to find a well written novel that's fully fleshed out, with realistic characters and situations. I'm mad that it took me so long to find this 💎.
My only draw back is the sex scenes, I personally prefer it to be 🔥 🔥🔥, and it was more like 🔥🔥.
Is the next installment out yet?
As someone who is new to reading romance novels and loves complex, believable characters who face challenging social and cultural barriers, My Way to You is one of the best novels I’ve read in a long time. As a social justice activist myself I was very wary of reading a romance novel and expected poorly drawn characters and a story that doesn’t reflect real life. I was very pleasantly surprised by how good the writing was overall and especially how deep Lydell’s understanding was in how an inter-racial couple like Simon and Regina would respond to the racist reactions to their relationship.
It takes skill as a writer to make social commentary without coming across as preachy. She lets her characters act and speak for themselves. The story is not predictable and there are plenty of twists and turns to satisfy any reader. Highly recommended.
I got to read My Way to You as an ARC, and I read it everywhere. The dentist office, the park, before bed, when I should have been doing other things... It's a great read with strong, smart, sexy characters. I loved the honesty, the passion, and the fact that I wanted to read the stuff between the love scenes, too! I felt like I was right there in the middle of it all, which was amazing as a reader, but I did have to work extra hard to keep the blush down when I was in public. Yeah, it was hot. I look forward to more Lyndell Williams books in the future! (P.S. I liked it so much that I pre ordered it!)
I'm not sure how to rate this novel.
***Trigger warnings for attempted sexual assault, male aggression, and violence.***

What I think was done well in this story, was it has compelling components of how couples navigate social opinions on interracial relationships. There were specific examples of how BW are specifically treated for dating outside of the race. It's an important conversation to have. However, I think the take away is love conquers all, so take that as you will. Simon and Regina/Gina never really talked about how they would support each other, other than ignore the haters. I'm not sure if that's a strategy I would take, especially since it almost always adversely impacted Regina. I think that was an important distinction to make. In this regard, love isn't enough (in my opinion).

As far as the love story itself, Simon needs counseling because there's definitely a lot of toxic masculinity, while his character grows overtime. On the flip side Gina isn't always great at communication. Do I think they seem like a realistic couple? Sure, conversations aren't happening, decisions are made for each other without so much of a consideration other than I think this would be good for my partner. A specific example is when did they decide to be monogamous? I don't know, I think Simon just decided for them. They are redeemable characteristics but the relationship dynamics were very troubling to me.
